The Cité de la Méditerranée
The missions of the Cité de la Méditerranée
The Cité de la Méditerranée project aims to bring together the scientific, economic, institutional and associative players involved in the issues and challenges facing the Mediterranean, and to make it part of a shared territorial and social ambition. It will rely on training, research, innovation and scientific mediation for and with society, to provide collective and innovative responses to the environmental, economic and societal challenges facing the Mediterranean. The project aims to work in partnership across the Aix-Marseille region.
The Mediterranean forms an incomparable geographical and human entity, and great civilizations have flourished on its shores. It is in danger, and it is urgent that all players mobilize to resolve this ecological and social crisis. The Cité de la Méditerranée must also be conceived on different scales (urban, territorial, Mediterranean) and is based on the current transformations of Marseille in both its materiality and its imaginary. Marseilles, described as the "gateway to the South" or the "capital of the Mediterranean", must today position itself as the interface between Europe, the Mediterranean and Africa. With this in mind, the Euroméditerranée project has alreadỳ transformed the port areas of the city of Marseille under the impact of architectural gestures (MuCEM) and the strengthening of companies dedicated to maritime activities (CMA-CGM).
A future focused on the Mediterranean
The report on the prefiguration study for the Cité de la Méditerranée project provides an overview of the wealth of existing and future collaborations between the potential of Aix-Marseille University, CISAM and socio-economic players in the blue economy. One of the Cité de la Méditerranée's key success criteria will be to coordinate or, at the very least, promote them jointly, thereby contributing to their growth and to potential mutual synergies in the following areas:
- The Blue Economy in the Mediterranean: trades and training
- Shipbuilding and maritime transport
- Submarine and offshore activities
- Port activities
- Marine biological resources
- Tourism
- Digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Marine renewable energies
- Maritime safety
- Adaptation to climate change
- Protection of the marine environment
- Foresight and maritime heritage in the Mediterranean
- Foresight and public decision-making
